Sri Lanka Part II
Saturday 4th March, 2006
Well, the last of Sri Lanka follows – we had fun in most of the places (not all I might add!) and here’s a little breakdown:
From Mirissa we decided it’d be cool to go and see the stilt fishermen at Weligama, what we didn’t know was that the Tsunami had taken out our hostel of choice and all the others were double or triple our budget. We thought sod that and jumped on a bus and headed for Unawatuna.
Unawatuna
After heroically standing up on a speeding bus with our backpacks next to the open door (plus the occasional Sri Lankan standing on our feet) we made it to a road, this was all there was but the guy on the bus assured us it was Unawatuna.
After the tuk-tuk drivers had debated as to whether or not they were going to be honest or not, they chose not, we started walking in the hope we’d spot a beach somewhere! Half way down this road my ‘heat stress’ kicked in and we gave in and paid a whole 100 rupees to get to the beach (2 minutes further down the road – oops…) Going from past use of our guidebook, and the fact no-one had heard of the place we wanted to go to, we just picked a random place nearish to the beach.
Won’t bore you with beach info apart from weird Sri Lankans playing with themselves and walking past pulling their pants down to their hairy bits, Jon losing the key for our hostel in the sand, me bollocking him as they said they had to put a new lock on (good bye budget), Jon looking for it with no joy, me having to go back and look and then Jon finding it just as we got there (not a happy, sweaty hot girl…) plus I bought a couple of beautiful skirts!
That’s about it for Unawatuna apart from Bug Lord… We had just settled into bed, I should say our ceiling was made from interweaved plastic sheeting with holes in and our mosquito net was only a single, and suddenly this terrifying buzzing started to come from the ceiling right above our heads, this was followed by the pattering of little running feet which made the ceiling bounce, then more buzzing, then a weird screaming noise – it’s safe to say I was crapping myself at this point and Jon had no choice other than to do as he was told and sleep under the single net with me (or let Bug Lord feed on him while he was asleep!!). Not a nice night – did not like Bug Lord…
Hikkaduwa
We hadn’t planned on going to Hikkaduwa but a few people said it was good so we gave it a shot. We’re much better at finding places to stay now, we don’t pay any more than what we planned and I don’t worry as much coz there will always be someone who has a room. We managed to get our room here for less than it said in our guidebook, settled in ad went off to have a look around.
Again, won’t bore you with days on the beach stories apart from just one – Jon’s Sea Turtle Adventure! When playing in the sea on one sunny day, Jon decided to play in the waves (trying to avoid being taken out by one basically) and happened to see a Sea Turtle, and it was only a metre away! This was Jon’s Sea Turtle Adventure… Good eh? (Jon is not happy with my last comment but if I have to write this I’ll write what I want HA HA) (As Jon has just pointed out, I don’t have to write this but as last time he tried to it turned out to be just like a boring guidebook, or informative and well written as he puts it, so I banned him!! So I do have to write it, stupid husband…) (Things are getting silly now, may take a break!)
We found a great place to eat called ‘The House of Roti’ – we pretty much had breakfast, lunch and dinner here the whole time as it was really cheap and really tasty (a Roti is basically a tortilla wrap with stuff of your choice inside and then toasted – think quesadilla).
Everyone had said there was lots of nightlife here, but it seems as soon as we get somewhere, everything changes. I am proud to say by this point I was semi-OK to drink beer, as there was nothing else other than dirty arrack, and whilst having a beer we noticed strobes at the other end of the beach. Jon, thinking his idea was a good one, decided to make us walk towards them in case something interesting was going on – it turned out the strobes were quite a distance down the beach and as soon as we got towards the end of our ‘trek’ they turned the damn things off, and that was that, we walked back…
Days passed, we ate, drank and sat on the beach and the time came to head for Negombo – our last destination in Sri Lanka.
Negombo
Sucks… There is nothing there apart from a dirty beach and some crappy shops. Never go… Oh, and a Sri Lankan version of Skegness – possibly the weirdest thing we saw in the whole of Sri Lanka. As Jon has just pointed, there was one good thing – the Airport, so you could get the hell out of there!!! He He.
We’re going to take a blog break for a couple of weeks now, you can still email us at j_beazt@hotmail.com or leave comments so we know you can access the blog – hope you are all well, bye for now!
